Tax Deductibility in Australia for Small Business
I’m not an accountant and cannot give tax advice but I am told that small businesses can automatically write off assets up to $20,000. It’s worth doing some research to determine your eligibility, or simply ask your accountant.
It’s my understanding that if you have a business that is generating an income of $100,000 pa (after GST) and the Purrfair costs $4,000 then your taxable income then becomes $96,000.
As the tax rate of earnings between $45,001 and $120,000 is 32.5 cents in the dollar, that equates to $1300 in tax savings. Put another way, after filing your tax returns, the $4,400 (inc. GST) cost of purchasing the Purrfair is adjusted to $2700.
If you’re generating an income at the highest taxable rate, prior to adjustments, that total cost of purchase after tax deductions can be as low as $2200, as tax on earnings above $180,000 is 45 cents in the dollar. I must stress thought that I’m not qualified to give tax advice and would recommend you confirm this with your accountant if you’d like to know more.
